As a Product Development Scientist for Burt's Bees, you will work within a team of engineers and scientists located in Durham, North Carolina to deliver and maintain a robust pipeline of innovative personal care and cosmetic products for this fast paced, exciting and growing business, in collaboration with cross-functional business partners.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Formulate new products in Skin Care, Lip Care, and beyond based on Benchmarks and/or desired aesthetics within Innovation Commercialization projects

  • Lead Claims Development and Substantiation Process, collaborating with Brand, Clinical, Design, Regulatory, and Legal

  • Define and use SOPs, best practices, and test methods to ensure a robust and rigorous development process

  • Analyze and interpret data to meet project targets and objectives, and make recommendations that drive efficiency and manage risk

  • Collaborate with and occasionally act as Process Engineering to define product specifications, inform scale-up, and author Manufacturing Processes for manufacturer guidance

  • Collaborate with and occasionally act as Process Engineering to develop and qualify new processes, equipment, and locations,

  • Collaborate with Packaging Scientists to create delighting Product experiences through formula and delivery

  • Act as Triad Lead on Innovation Projects, representing all technical functions to broader Project Team

  • Support Consumer projects through participation in multi-disciplinary teams by defining problems, personas, and jobs; building ideas via fast feedback; ideating solutions and prototyping where necessary.

  • Lead Technical Discovery projects to solve technical challenges by developing deep knowledge through research and experimentation

  • Occasionally represent R&D to Leadership, Sales Force, and Customers through Innovation Fairs

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or other scientific fields

  • 5 years of experience in formulation or related discipline

  • Confident self-starter, capable of working independently and cross-functionally with minimal supervision and direction in a fast paced environment

  • Proven ability to learn quickly

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated strong leadership and influencing skills

  • Excellent organization skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and effectively

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters or above in non-Engineering Sciences preferred

  • Macro and micro emulsions

  • Wax and/or polymer chemistry

  • Process Scale-up

  • Fragrance Development

  • Over the Counter Drug Monographs

  • Consumer Testing

  • Tracking and understanding Personal Care and Beauty Category trends
